2. Go to the store. If you are in consumer goods, get out to the nearest Wal-Mart and see what the average Joe is complaining about in the aisles. This can be some of the most reliable information because it is real-time and real-life without any cameras or surveys involved. What are they looking for? What can't they find? What do they dislike about the products that are already out there?

3. Find trade publications for your particular direct marketing niche. There is a magazine for almost every industry out there, often there are more than one and many of these are FREE subscriptions to the people in the industry. Look at the editorials, look at the letters to the editor. If people are passionate enough to write in about a topic, you can bet there are 1000 more people with the same issue. Don't take any knowledge for granted. Just because you know something does not mean that everyone in an industry knows it.
